Boyhood in Ohio; parents' conversion to Mormonism, 1842; his opposition to the Church; their removal to Nauvoo, Illinois, and his decision to remain in Ohio; his LDS conversion after listening to the preachings of Joseph Smith; reuniting with his family in Nauvoo; mantle of the Prophet upon Brigham Young; exodus west; enlistment in the Mormon Battalion and its march; arrival in Utah, 1849; journey to take provisions to Manit, Utah settlers, 1849; call to colonize Manti; family data.
